Tamil television for families who carried the language abroad

Tamil is one of the oldest living classical languages in the world, with a written literature stretching back more than two thousand years, and the first language the Government of India ever formally recognised as classical.

It also travels well. Tamil is an official language in India, Sri Lanka and Singapore, is taught in schools in Malaysia, and has deep-rooted communities from Mauritius to South Africa. In North America the community has grown quickly — Central New Jersey has the largest concentration in the US, followed by the Bay Area to Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, Seattle and Toronto, where Scarborough has become one of the best-known Tamil neighbourhoods anywhere outside Asia.

Our Tamil package brings the television those households grew up with into the living room here: live channels from Tamil Nadu, a seven-day catch-up window that absorbs the time difference, and an on-demand library for everything you'd rather watch on your own schedule.

When Tamil TV airs where you live

India Standard Time doesn't change for daylight saving, so the gap with North America shifts twice a year — from 9½ hours on the East Coast in summer to 13½ hours on the West Coast in winter. Here is roughly where Tamil Nadu's broadcast day lands on your clock.

Times shown are for US and Canadian daylight saving time (mid-March to early November). In winter, subtract a further hour. Prime-time serials therefore air during the North American working day — which is exactly why most of our Tamil customers watch them on seven-day catch-up in the evening instead.

What Tamil households actually watch

Tamil television has formats and habits you won't find anywhere else. The package covers the full range — every channel delivered through authorised distribution partners. See the full channel line-up across every language.

News from across Tamil Nadu

Round-the-clock bulletins and debate from Chennai, with regional reporting from Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli — state politics, national headlines and stories that matter to Tamils abroad.

Mega serials

Tamil television's long-running daily family dramas, some running for years. The single biggest reason households subscribe — and the reason catch-up matters so much across time zones.

Tamil cinema

Films from Chennai's film industry across every era, from the black-and-white classics to recent releases, plus weekend film premieres and festival-day movie specials.

Pattimandram and oratory

The traditional Tamil debate format, where speakers argue opposing sides of a literary or social question with wit and classical references. A fixture of festival-day television, especially at Pongal.

Music

Film songs old and new, Carnatic concerts, devotional music, and folk traditions from gaana to villu paattu — plus concert coverage through the Margazhi music season.

Devotional

Temple broadcasts and daily worship, Thevaram and Thiruppavai recitation, spiritual discourse, and live coverage from Murugan's six abodes and Tamil Nadu's great temples on festival days.

Cookery and lifestyle

Chettinad, Kongu, Madurai and Tirunelveli kitchens, festival recipes, health and home programming — the shows that quietly get watched most in many homes.

Kids in Tamil

Cartoons and animated series dubbed into Tamil, and children's programming made in the language — a daily dose of spoken Tamil for children growing up with English at school.

Sport with Tamil commentary

Cricket, kabaddi and regional sport called in Tamil, plus coverage of jallikattu, the traditional bull-taming sport held around Pongal.

Comedy and reality

Stand-up, comedy compilations, cookery and talent competitions, and the weekend entertainment formats families plan their evenings around.

The Tamil festival year, on your screen

Tamil television follows the Tamil calendar, and festival days bring special broadcasts that run from dawn. Here is the year by Tamil month — with each month's rough position on the Western calendar. Exact dates move from year to year.

In Canada, January is Tamil Heritage Month — recognised unanimously by the House of Commons, with Pongal falling in the middle of it. Across the Greater Toronto Area it is the busiest month of the year for Tamil community events.

Helping children raised abroad keep their Tamil

Across the United States, a network of volunteer-run weekend Tamil schools has grown up to keep the language alive in American-born children — many affiliated with a long-running academy based in the Bay Area. Some students now earn high school language credit, and the Seal of Biliteracy, for their Tamil.

Classes teach reading and writing. What they can't provide is hours of everyday spoken Tamil — and spoken Tamil differs noticeably from the written form, which is one of the reasons children find it hard to hold a conversation with grandparents even after years of lessons. Television fills exactly that gap.

Small habits that make a difference

  • Swap one daily cartoon to Tamil. Familiar characters in a new language are easier to follow than new shows.
  • Watch festival programmes together. Pongal and Deepavali specials come with context children remember.
  • Rewatch on demand. Children happily watch favourites repeatedly, and repetition is how vocabulary sticks.
  • Let grandparents choose the channel. When they visit, the remote goes to them — and the children listen in.

For Indian Tamil and Sri Lankan Tamil households

North America's Tamil community is really two communities that share a language. Many families in the United States trace their roots to Tamil Nadu, while much of Canada's Tamil population — particularly around Toronto — is of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage, with its own dialect, traditions and news interests.

Our Tamil package is built mainly around channels broadcasting from Tamil Nadu. Tamil cinema, serials, music and festival broadcasts are shared and watched across both communities, but if particular Sri Lankan Tamil programming matters to your household, tell us when you request your free trial so we can show you exactly what is available before you commit.

Watch on the screens you already have

No dish, no cable line and no engineer visit. Tamil channels stream over your home internet to the devices already in the house. About 15 Mbps is enough for one HD stream; 25 Mbps or more is comfortable for 4K or several rooms at once.

Four steps to Tamil TV

  1. Try it free. Request a 24-hour trial and test it on your own TV and internet.
  2. Choose a plan. Pick a subscription term from one month to five years, paid once.
  3. Sign in. Your login arrives by email, usually within minutes.
  4. Watch. Tamil channels, catch-up and on-demand, plus every other language pack.

Why one subscription beats a handful of apps

Many families piece Tamil television together from a streaming app here, a video site there and a relative's login somewhere else. It works until the serial you follow moves platforms, the stream drops during a festival broadcast, or nobody can remember which app has the news.

A single subscription puts live channels, catch-up and on-demand behind one remote, at one price, with support you can actually call. Every stream is delivered through authorised distribution partners; we do not host or rebroadcast content ourselves and we do not carry unlicensed feeds.

What you won't pay for

  • No dish or installation. Nothing mounted on the house.
  • No annual contract. Terms from one month, paid once, nothing recurring.
  • No per-language add-on. Every Indian language pack is included.
  • No moving fees. Your login travels with you across the US and Canada.
  • No hidden charges. Our refund policy is published in plain English.

Tamil IPTV questions, answered

What Tamil households in the US and Canada ask us most often. More in our general FAQ.

How many Tamil channels are included?

More than 90 live Tamil channels, covering news, daily serials, cinema, music, devotional, kids, sport, cookery, comedy and entertainment. Tamil films and series on demand are included at no extra cost, and the same subscription carries every other Indian language pack.

What time do Tamil serials air in the US and Canada?

Tamil prime-time serials broadcast roughly 8:00 to 10:30 pm in India, which is about 10:30 am to 1:00 pm on the East Coast and 7:30 to 10:00 am on the West Coast during daylight saving time, and an hour earlier in winter. Because that falls in the working day, most customers watch them in the evening on the seven-day catch-up.

What is the time difference between India and North America?

India does not use daylight saving time, so the gap changes through the year. It is 9½ hours to US Eastern time and Toronto in summer and 10½ hours in winter, rising to 12½ hours to Pacific time in summer and 13½ hours in winter.

Can I watch Pongal and other festival programmes?

Yes. Festival broadcasts — Pongal specials and debates, Tamil New Year, Deepavali, Navaratri, Karthigai Deepam and temple coverage — air live on the channels in the package and stay available on seven-day catch-up, so a festival morning in Tamil Nadu can be watched the same evening in North America.

Will Tamil TV help my children learn the language?

It helps with the part weekend classes find hardest: everyday spoken Tamil. Spoken Tamil differs from the written language taught in class, and regular exposure through cartoons, family serials and festival programmes gives children the listening practice that makes conversations with grandparents easier.

Is there programming for Sri Lankan Tamil households?

The Tamil package is built mainly around channels broadcasting from Tamil Nadu, and its cinema, serials, music and festival programming are widely watched in both Indian and Sri Lankan Tamil homes. If specific Sri Lankan Tamil content matters to you, mention it when you request the free trial and we will show you what is available before you subscribe.

Does the Tamil package work in Canada?

Yes. The service streams over the internet, so it works anywhere in the United States and Canada, including the Greater Toronto Area, Montreal and Vancouver. Your login moves with you if you relocate, with no reinstallation.

Do I need a dish or a set-top box?

No dish is ever needed. The service runs on Smart TVs, Firestick, Apple TV, Android and iOS devices and computers you already own. A set-top box is optional, and useful if you want a single remote that boots straight into live Tamil television.

What internet speed do I need for Tamil channels?

About 15 Mbps of stable bandwidth handles one HD stream. For 4K, or several televisions at once, 25 Mbps or more is recommended. A wired Ethernet connection to the TV is steadier than Wi-Fi.

Can I try Tamil channels before paying?

Yes. The 24-hour free trial needs no card details. Ask for Tamil when you apply and the trial will be set up with the Tamil channels, so you can check picture quality on your own TV and internet connection.

Is the service licensed?

Content is delivered through authorised distribution partners. We do not host or rebroadcast programming ourselves and we do not carry unlicensed feeds.
